Research Themes

Study of CNS regeneration

Mammalian central nerves, once injured, become irreversibly damaged and the damage leads to functional loss. In contrast, neuraxon regeneration is possible with the central nerves of fish. For example, when optic nerves are severed in goldfish, neurites re-elongate at the severed end in about a week, regenerated neuraxons reach the arget optic tecta in about a month, and subsequently, after synaptic reorganization, optic functions themselves are fully recovered in 5-6 months. Characteristically in fish, neuron deaths are suppressed first to maintain life after neuraxon injury, and then manifestation of molecules is induced to newly elongate neurites. By explaining this regeneration mechanism, I explore the possibility of central neuraxon regeneration in mammals.
