Satellite Data Assimilation for Prediction of Precipitation

For ideal river and water resources management, the accurate weather prediction is indispensable. A weather prediction system consists of numerical models, observation data, and data assimilation techniques bridging the model and observation data. We develop and improve a data assimilation system for the satellite data observed by a microwave radiometer (AMSR-E) onboard an earth observation satellite, Aqua. The AMSR-E data are used to estimate sea surface temperature, soil moisture, etc, and we focus on water vapor and cloud water in the atmosphere. We have improved the assimilation result utilizing various kind of observation information.

Water Cycle under the Climate Change

In these days, we are facing recordable heavy rainfall events, decreasing snowfall, droughts, which are thought to be caused by "Climate Change" driven by the global warming. Lots of research works have been done using outputs from climate models. However, the huge amount of climate model outputs is not fully investigated yet and lots of questions of water cycle in future remain to be answered. In our research activity, the variability of summer heavy rainfall around Japan under the condition of climate change. We also work on a downscaling technique using numerical weather prediction model, and apply those results to assess future water resources in Asia.

Asian monsoon system

Understanding the mechanism of heavy rainfall/snowfall and the cause of regional climate conditions are necessary for better flood control and water resources management. For that purpose, we implement data analysis and numerical simulations. In data analysis, we use various and huge amount of data such as reanalysis data, satellite observation products, radar and in-situ observation data. Regional weather prediction model is also used for verifying hypothesis obtained from data analysis. Currently weather and climate in East Asia, especially the frontal heavy rainfall in summer and the heavy snowfall in winter around Japan, are focused on.
