Laser Conditioning of Superabrasive Wheels

Laser Conditioning of Superabrasive Wheels Superabrasive grinding wheels containing diamond or CBN grits are widely used in grinding hard brittle materials or hardened steels, because of their high hardness, thermal resistance and long tool life. In order to achieve efficient or fine grinding, a specific surface topography on the wheel face should be generated and therefore periodic truing and dressing are required. As an alternative to the conventional conditioning method, laser truing/dressing is proposed as a new technique in which a laser beam is used as the non-contact thermal dressing tool of superabrasive wheels.

Studies on High-efficiency and High-precision Machining of Difficult-to-machine Materials by PVD Coated Tools

The PVD coated tools by UBM (UnBalanced Magnetron) sputtering method is developed for high-efficient machining of difficult-to-machine materials. These coated tools are characterized by low friction coefficient, smooth surface and low affinity for work materials.

Studies on Turning of Difficult-to-machine Materials with Actively Driven Rotary Tool (Spinning Tool)

Studies on Turning of Difficult-to-machine Materials with Actively Driven Rotary Tool (Spinning Tool) The turning with spinning inserts called rotary tools, where the cutting tool is self-propelled by cutting forces (SPRT), is expected to improve the tool life and/or productivity. This research focuses on a deterministic method of controlling the intermittent thermodynamics of turning with new spinning tools called actively driven rotary tool (ADRT), where the self-propelled concept is replaced with an externally powered and programmable spindle. This turning strategy is easily executable using mill-turn machine tool.

Turning of difficult-to-machine materials by actively driven rotary tool

Turning with a spinning insert called actively driven rotary tool (ADRT), where the cutting tool revolves by a powered and programmable spindle, is investigated from the thermal aspects. Dry and MQL external turning tests of austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) and heat-resistant Ni-based alloy (Inconel 718) are carried out. The tool temperature at the flank face is measured using a newly assembled fiber-coupled two-color pyrometer. In dry turning of AISI 304 steel, the tool temperature decreases from approximately 730ºC to 660ºC as the tool rotation speed increases from 10 m/min to 100 m/min.
