Research Themes

Study on the method of X-ray stress measurement

Deterioration of infrastructures has become a social problem. During prolonged time, The effects of outer forces and environment corrode and cause fatigue to metals. Due to this there is an increase in possibility of a failure or damage. Similar deterioration in cars, railroads, airplanes and ships has to be avoided. These require improvement in fuel consumption and making the products lighter, while the requirement for strength is increasing all the time. Continuing research is done to support these goals in the fields of material science, engineering and environment studies.

Regarding these issues, X-ray, neutron and synchrotron quantum beam “particle beam evaluation” applications are conducted in my laboratory. This technique uses the crystals nanoscale information to obtain macroscale information (Residual stress, structure analysis, hardness etc.) with high precision. Though small samples can be measured within the experiment room but in manufacturing sites and outside of the laboratory some measurement problems such equipment surface and measurements speed still remain.

Under these circumstances, the main focus of research has been the effectiveness of 2 dimensional detectors for 20 years. In 2009 I went to Kanazawa University New Technology Meeting where my appeal was recognized. The world's first device was implemented by Japanese companies, compared to the traditional method approximately 10 times faster measurement speed and precision was achieved. Also, the effectiveness outside laboratory conditions which was difficult for the earlier technique was proved to work. After this, under these circumstances, within the country two other instances have come up with similar technique and actions towards standardization of measurement techniques has started to gain interest. During this time, scientific society, including me, Kanazawa University related staff and OB are active in developing devices. Our university is the base of the studies.

In my laboratory this technique is called “The new X-ray technique”. The aim is to spread this technique worldwide together with the Japanese industry foundation. We think that in the future the present technique is going to change to this new X-ray technique. To speed up this change, collaboration studies with Tsukuba high energy particle accelerator research organization are done to introduce a new type of SOI pixel semiconductor X-ray detector, which is 100 times faster and accurate than the traditional detector type. With this technique real time measurements are possible. Now aiming to be used against a worldwide problem of railroad fatigue and how to efficiently locate and repair the damaged parts. We are also planning to make high precision inspection and traceability in automotive production lines possible. We aim to make this possible within the next 5 years.
