Research Themes

Study on the dental treatment with laser beam

In dental treatment, laser beam is not only used as a substitute of a rotary cutting instrument, but also applied to various surgical treatment of the hard and soft tissues. Laser irradiation to the human tooth is effective for the sterilization of the bacteria which causes caries and periodontosis. The purpose of our study is to solve the mechanism of bactericidal effects induced by a laser irradiation. A temperature measurement on the human tooth is performed with two color pyrometer. In addition, a measurement of the impulse force induced by a laser irradiation on the human tooth is measured.

Study on the layered manufacturing with metal powder

This study describes the consolidation characteristics of chromium molybdenum steel (SCM) based powder used for rapid tooling. The laser beam used was a Yb:fiber laser with a wavelength of 0.1mm. In order to investigate the influence of irradiation conditions on the maximum temperature at the focal area, a two-color pyrometer developed by the authors was used. In addition, the cross section of the consolidated structure was analyzed with an electron probe micro analysis, and the cutting force was measured with a dynamometer.

Study on Reduction of Residual Stress Induced during Rapid Tooling Process

This paper deals with the reduction of residual stress induced during the layered manufacturing processes. The powder used is a mixture of ferrous based metal powder. To evaluate the residual stresses induced during layered manufacturing processes, a strain gauge is attached on the bottom face of the consolidation plate. The residual stress within consolidated structure is calculated from the amount of change measured by the strain gauge when the consolidated structure is cut with an end mill. The influences of the thickness and the height of consolidated structure on the residual stresses are investigated. In addition, the effect of the pre-heating by a laser beam irradiation and the laser condition for the layered manufacturing are evaluated.
