Research Themes

Physiological roles of membrane transporters for drug targets

Transporters are involved in regulation of various bioactive compounds such as carnitine, uric acid, bile acid, hexose, and prostaglandins. Accordingly, transporters associated with those compounds are expected to be effective targets to maintain human health and to improve diseases. Especially, foods are known to affect those transporters, therefore, clarification of interaction of thoss etransporters with food components are expected to be used for manupulation transporter activities.

Mechanism and evaluation of alteration of serum uric acid level

Mechanism and evaluation of controlling serum uric acid level was studied. As the new mechanism, importance of BCRP in intestinal secretin of uric acid was demonstrated. Furthermore, for renal reabsorption of uric acid, cooperation of several transporters was clearly demonstrated, including URAT1, GLUT9 and SMCT1.

Roles of membrane transporters in drug efficacy and adverse events

Transporters are important factor to regulate drug absorption and disposition. Accordingly, alteration of transporter activity is a great issue for efficiacy and safety of drugs. Mechanisms of drug interaction and effect of genetic polymorphisms will provide useful information for drug discovery/development and pharmacotherapy for individualized therapy.
