Research Themes
Signal and media processing based on color information engineering (imaging science, color engineering, signal processing, information theory)
Personal computers have become capable of processing information on a large scale due to their increased speed and performance. On the other hand, information in the world (big data, Internet of Things, blockchain, cross reality, mathematics, data science, AI, etc.) is becoming enormous, and the relationships among them may seem complicated at first glance. However, by thinking of these data as “signals,” it is possible to extract important information from the vast and complex data. Based on the above, we conduct education and research on image science and color engineering, which are the basis of signal media processing. Specifically, we conduct education and research on acquisition, measurement, encoding, processing, generation, representation, reproduction, optimization, analysis, and evaluation of color images that are suitable and desirable to users from the aspect of software and hardware co-design, considering image processing, signal processing, optics, and spatial frequency characteristics of vision. We are also engaged in machine learning (deep learning). We are also actively exploring new color information engineering that takes into account machine learning (deep learning) and quantum information science.
Signal and media processing related to computer graphics (3DCG, texture informatics, media database)
With the practical spread of generative AI such as Stable Diffusion, GPT-4, and Gemini, processing and evaluation related to computer graphics are becoming more important. In order to handle computer graphics, high processing performance and short processing time with GPUs are required as parameters. It is imperative to establish efficient processing methods to achieve high-performance computation. Therefore, we conduct education and research on image processing methods based on computer graphics theory, including modeling, shading, rendering, and animation, as well as on the construction of quantitative evaluation models for object texture information and media databases. In addition, we are visualizing the results of our research by simulating on computer graphics, taking into account metaverse and cross reality technologies, the representation and reproduction of images that would be impossible in the real world.
Signal and media processing related to visual information science (3D, VR, XR, watermarking, media information and communication)
Humans acquire, process, and analyze visual information by gazing at objects in their daily lives. We conduct education and research on visual media (image media, video media, and interactive media). In particular, we are studying the quality evaluation of encoding of multi-view 3D images and videos, quality evaluation of 360-degree camera images and videos, and image presentation methods with less burden on users, considering not only subjective evaluation of questionnaire and emotional information but also objective evaluation of biometric and health information, image feature values, machine learning (support vector machine, deep learning), etc. We are also conducting multivariate analysis and statistical analysis of visual information. We are conducting research on media information communication and the construction of evaluation models for images that users find desirable not only objectively but also subjectively by using statistical methods such as multivariate analysis.
Signal and media processing for medical systems (medical imaging, medical AI information systems, computer-aided diagnosis)
In hospitals and other medical facilities, there are many opportunities for medical professionals to view medical images visually, and they need information on which parts of the image are important and which parts of the image are of interest. Of course, it is one method for medical professionals to make judgments based on their own knowledge, but if a computer can provide some clues to the area of interest in advance, it is thought that computer-aided diagnosis is possible. From this perspective, we are conducting research on medical imaging and medical AI information systems from the field of information science. By utilizing the theory and knowledge of computer graphics and computer vision, we conduct research on medical image processing including region detection, region segmentation, reconstruction, and image quality evaluation of medical images, thereby promoting collaboration between medicine, information science, and image engineering. We are also conducting research on computer-aided diagnosis, including computer-aided surgery.
Signal and media processing for mobility social systems (next-generation transportation information systems, information usability, human interface interaction)
Self-position estimation is one of the most important technologies for automated driving. Since unmanned driving is assumed, it is important to ensure that the vehicle follows traffic standards such as white lines, red lines, signs, etc. Automated driving technology has made remarkable progress every year since the 2020s, and some Level 4 equivalent automated driving tests including unmanned driving have begun. We are conducting research on ITS image processing for traffic information systems and automated driving systems from the field of information science. We are planning to construct a simulation system for self-position estimation, environment recognition, and vehicle route selection support, and to provide support for next-generation traffic information systems for a safe and secure mobility society from the viewpoint of service informatics.
Information platform, hyper-distributed architecture, and embedded system software design for realizing large-scale information system infrastructure, application to software formal methods and development environment, and data-driven programming
We aim to create new knowledge and unknown value by analyzing multimedia data (images, video, audio, sound, natural language, etc.) related to Big Data, Internet of Things, visual/language fusion, generative AI (explainable AI), cross reality, blockchain, etc. by adopting a data-driven approach in computer science. We aim to create new knowledge and unknown values by analyzing multimedia signals with high accuracy. We will contribute to the local society and economy of Ishikawa Prefecture and the Hokuriku region, including Kanazawa City, by considering not only the analysis and technology of multimedia signal processing but also the design of information systems through programming design as a cycle, and we will also challenge to realize a human-centric and comfortable data-driven DX society. We will take on the challenge of realizing a human-centric and comfortable data-driven DX society. Based on the above, we will explore the optimal design of human-centric image hardware for the realization of large-scale information system infrastructure, such as signal processing and image processing technologies using Verilog and VHDL on embedded system platforms such as FPGA and Raspberry Pi. I am planning to conduct research on the hardware aspects, optimal design of embedded systems based on dependability theory, image information processing systems with emphasis on real-time performance, automation, acceleration, and optimization of large-scale information systems by applying software formalisms, and data-driven programming. I am planning to conduct research in the areas of optimal design of embedded systems based on the theory of dependability.
