Research Themes
Preparation and structural analysis of high molecular weight and functional phenolic resins
Phenolic resins are one of the oldest synthetic polymers and widely used in the industry due to their heat-resistance, chemical-resistance, dimensional stability and so on. However, the brittle limited to the application of phenolic resins. In this work, we attempt to add flexibility and sturdiness to phenolic resins by the preparation of high molecular weight resins and also the formation of molecular composite with flexible polymers.
Development of functional phenolic oligomers
Calixarene(CR) is a cyclic phenol oligomer, which is of interest as a host-molecule. Poly(calixarene) was obtained by the polycondensation of CR with paraformaldehyde. We tried to prepare high molecular weight poly(calixarene) in organic solvents. This polymer is expected to have different characters from that of CR monomer unit. Poly(calixarene) will form capsule with larger guests such as natural occurring polymers, proteins and viruses. The preparation of high molecular weight polycalixarene and its characteristics such as aggregation behavior are investigated.
Development of high performance and high fuctionality for polymer materials
Many cellulose derivatives show cholesteric liquid crystalline (LC) phases in molten state and solution. The thermotropic liquid crystalline phases were cholesteric. Cholesteric liquid crystalline phases exhibit striking optical properties arising from the selective reflection of circulary polarized light at a wavelength corresponding to the pitch. In this work, the molecular orientation of cholesteric mesophase was controlled by the interpolymer complex of cellulose derivatives with thermoplastic polymers. The preparation and properties of LC materials with controlled cholesteric mesophases are investigated.
