Research Themes

Support for the action and education for disaster mitigation

The Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2007 made me think that I, as a geographer focusing on the region, a person with experience in geography education, and a researcher concerned with the fishing industry, might have applicable knowledge and opportunities for involvement, and I have started support work and research that will lead to an enhanced capacity for regional disaster prevention. More specifically, as a person involved in fisheries research, I deal with tsunamis, which can cause disasters along the coast. As a geography educator, I am involved in supporting and researching school and community disaster prevention related to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, etc.

Distribution and regions for fisheries and seafood, and study on learning and education for food and meal

I focus on the distribution and consumption of fisheries products from a geographic viewpoint. From where and how are the marine products we are eating delivered? I am interested in the regional positioning and roles related to these activities, the links between regions and their expansion, the evaluation of the regions involved and food products, as well as indigenous food culture and dissemination and establishment of new diets. While focusing on the fishing industry and marine products, through geography and social studies education and daily diet, I also try to develop a curriculum about food and diet that is not limited to discipline and nutrition education.

Creation, spread and enlightenment of illustration map

I am interested in maps (depictions), which are one method/tool to look into a region as a person involved in geography and geography education. In particular, I intend to develop and disseminate “illustration maps” that do not require sophisticated techniques, that can be developed out of simple drawings representing individual interests in maps, and that do not limit their use to research and education. My intention is to promote interest in maps, geography, and the region among people who find map reading and drawing difficult, and who feel they have little connection with maps, by lowering the barrier and increasing options for coming into contact with maps.
