Research Themes

Study on the Behavior of Trace Element in Hydrophere.

As the behavior of trace elements on organisms greatly changes according to chemical form, the development of determination methods for the chemical species (speciation) which clarify the presence of each element in a hydrosphere, has become one main target for research in the field of environmental chemistry. Utilizing the methods of liquid-liquid extraction, atomic spectrometry, chromatography, and coulometry etc., we are developing highly-sensitive and highly selective determination methods which can be applied toward trace elements in environmental waters.

Development of remediation technology utilizing the natural cycle

We are developing low energy and low burden environmental improvement (remediation) technology using natural cycle. Specifically, we are involved with the research and development of methods to stabilize within the ocean atmospheric carbon dioxide cycling in the natural world through photosynthesis by marine phytoplankton, and phytoremediation; technology for repairing regions of the environment contaminated by toxic substances utilizing plants etc.

Research relating to eutrophication and trace elements in aquatic environments

By conducting field surveys in aquatic environments and research into the chemical and physical behavior of laboratory experiments, we are proceeding to clarify the eutrophication mechanism in water bodies with great anthropogenic influence, and the circulation of arsenic and other heavy metals. In particular, we are investigating the relation of eutrophication to biological processes, the effect of human activity, and impact on the earth’s environment, etc.
