Research Themes
Advanced analysis reveals diversity in rainfall patterns
To interpret the diversity and variability of rainfall patterns that have evolved in recent years, we implemented an innovative model to determine whether a rainfall event is extreme or not. Briefly, based on a certain threshold, we encode the dangerous daily rainfall data as 1 or 0, and then group them into words of several bits. The generated words reveal the variability of daily rainfall patterns throughout the year, thereby shedding light on extreme or non-extreme periods and filtering out transitional periods that did not manifest as dangerous events.
Improvement of river flow measurement techniques using tomography
Tomography techniques have proven to be a more effective tool for river flow measurement than traditional methods. By integrating multiple sensors of the FAT system at a river site, we are enhancing the modality of tomography measurements. This integration provides complementary data, such as flow direction and intensity, from various angles, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of river flow. This approach aims to compete with world-class methods such as ADCPs and advance the state-of-the-art in river flow measurement.
High-precision, continuous, and high-resolution flow observation using a river acoustic tomography system
Long-term, continuous, and high-resolution river discharge observations remain a major challenge in river engineering. To address this challenge, we use an advanced measurement tool, the Fluvial Acoustic Tomography (FAT), to investigate river dynamics during extreme events such as floods. Our current research focuses on improving accurate discharge observations in river environments, aiming to provide reliable river discharge records.
