Research Themes

Study on structure and physiological role of calcitonin in marine invertebrates and vertebrates (particularly fish)

Calcitonin is a hypocalcemic hormone that results in the suppression of osteoclastic activity. This hormone was recently detected and sequenced in the sea squirt (a marine invertebrate), although the animal does not have bone. In the present study, we examine the physiological role of calcitonin in invertebrates, such as the sea squirt and the sea worm. Taking our previous data about vertebrates into consideration, our study will provide further knowledge on the evolution of the structure and function of calcitonin in invertebrates and vertebrates.

Effect of physical stimuli and bioactive substances on the bone metabolism: analysis by the culture system of fish scales

Fish scale is a calcified organ that contains osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and bone matrix. Therefore, we developed an assay system using fish scale. Using this system, we investigate physical stimuli (hypergravity, microgravity, magnetic fields, and ultrasound) and hormonal responses.

Effect of heavy metal and endocrine-disrupting chemical on bone metabolism

We investigate the influence of environmental contaminants using the scale as a model of human bone. We recently demonstrated that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) disrupt the bone metabolism in fish. It has been reported that PAHs, including oil, induce spinal deformity in fish. We will try to determine the mechanism that causes spinal deformity in fish as a result of oil spills.
