Research Themes

Evaluation and development of analytical techniques for measurements of metal-binding organic ligands in seawater

The bioavailability of trace metals in seawater for marine phytoplankton is highly dependent on the chemical speciation (including complexation with organic ligand) of the metal. Therefore, the analysis of these organic ligands is essential to understand the behavior of trace metals in the ocean. However, the diversity and low concentration of the organic ligands complicate measurements. In our work, we use electrochemical methods to improvise and develop new analytical methods for ligand measurement.

Elucidating trace metal distribution in the ocean

Elucidating trace metal distribution in the ocean Increasing human activities have led to greater discharge of heavy metals into the ocean. Under the international GEOTRACES project (https://www.geotraces.org/), we survey the North Pacific Ocean and its surrounding region and reveal the trace metal distribution in those waters.
