Clarification of impact crushing behavior and energy absorption maximization design

Experimental research is being conducted to understand the impact crushing behavior and energy absorption effect of basic structural members with thin-walled cross-section such as circular cylinders and rectangular cylinders, those attached with reinforcing ribs, and structural members packed with soft materials such as foam materials. Simulations are implemented through the dynamic-explicit finite element method. Also, by applying optimized design methods such as response surface approximation, we are attempting to determine shapes and dimensions with greater energy absorption effect, and confirming their effectiveness. To improve the collection rate of empty cans, we are conducting developmental research into the optimized design of easy-to-crush can shapes, and honeycomb cell structure materials for impact absorption.

Bionic design research of branch systems and its application to engineering design

Applications toward engineering design are being researched by investigating the optimality of adroit branch system morphologies such as root systems, tree branches, and vascular networks seen in living things. Research is being pursued to develop reinforced stiffener morphology optimization methods for shell structures utilizing branch systems, system design methods for the collection and delivery of matter and energy into pre-determined three-dimensional spaces, and design methods for cooling tube systems.

Development of structure optimization methods and its application

To enable the efficient design of optimum structural response accompanying structural analysis, structural response design sensitivity analysis methods (response sensitivity with respect to design variables) must be made more efficient. Development is being pursued into design sensitivity analysis methods for elastoplastic and dynamic shock structure response, as well as design methods based on response surface approximation methods which do not employ design sensitivity of toward strong nonlinear response. Moreover, versatile and efficient search methods are being developed for mathematical optimization problems possessing many local solutions.
