Research Themes

Study on pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in tumor development and progression

It has been well recognized that inflammatory responses have crucial roles in the development, progression, and metastasis steps of cancer. Moreover, pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor and chemokines have been presumed to be indispensable for inflammatory resposense. We are investigating the roles of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in development, progression, and metastasis processes of cancer, mainly by using mouse models.

Elucidaiton on the roles of Pim kinases in cancer development and progression

We determined the amino acid sequence of a novel serine/threonine kinase, Pim-3. We further unraveled that Pim-3 expression is observed in malignant lesions but not normal tissues of endoderm-derived organs and that Pim-3 can promote the survival of tumor cells by counteracting the activities of pro-apoptosis molecules. We are now eluciding the regulatory mechanisms underlying Pim-3 activation and expression, in order to develop a novel type of anti-cancer drugs targeting Pim-3.

Study on roles of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in iflammation.

It has been widely accepted that pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor and chemokines are crucial in inflammation. We are investigating the regualatory mechanisms underlying pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine expression and their pathophysiological roles in inflamamtory reactions.
